MOSCOW, February 19 (RIA Novosti) - Warsaw hopes the U.S. will continue its plans under the new administration to deploy missile shield elements in Poland, the country's defense minister said on Thursday.

U.S. President Barack Obama has said he may put on hold his predecessor's plans to deploy 10 missiles in Poland and a radar in the Czech Republic, which he said needed more analysis.

Washington has moved to find a compromise on the missile shield dispute with Moscow, which opposes the plans, and has sought closer cooperation with Russia to prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons. The missile threat from Iran has been cited as a reason for deploying the new bases in Central Europe.

"I must openly say that we expect America to fulfill the obligations it took on... last year," Bogdan Klich said ahead of an informal meeting of 26 NATO countries' defense ministers.

The former Soviet bloc nations and NATO members since 1999, Poland and the Czech Republic signed deals with Washington in the summer to host its military bases.

The United States accepted Poland's demands for extra security guarantees to offset potential risks of deploying the base, including a Patriot missile air-defense system and greater military ties.
